STATE OF THE ART

So you say
all the words
in the verses of old

by now have
grown dull

and heavy
as stones—

but can stone
not be cut

and employed
to build bridges?

And what is a bridge
but a bond
which connects

one faraway thing
to another

directly.
And what is
connection

if not
timeless poetry—
or at least

our most up-
to-date
metaphor?
