THE RACE

Alas, I was not the first 

to feel,

in the space 

behind my eyeballs, 

the tension 

of a bitter vs. sour nation 

growing so incontrovertibly 

stronger—

to long for a moment

(or an hour) to hold 

my poor ungainly 

face underwater.
